With a final round of 3-under-par 69 to break his streak of three straight 70s, Jay Lumpkin, a 30- year-old PGA teaching assistant at the Long Cove Club at Amelia Island Plantation in Northeast Florida, finished three strokes ahead of Jeffrey Roth, of Birmingham, Mich., Bob Menne, of Concord, Mass., and Gibby Gilbert, of Chattanooga, Tenn. In doing so, Gilbert earned the $30,000 first-place check. Roth’s final-round 7-under-par 65 was one of the best ever recorded on the much-publicized PGA West Stadium course.
