Laurie Hammer, a 34-y e a r -old PGA Professional from Boynton Beach, Fla., had his wife, Marlene, to thank for his win in the 10th PGA Professional National Championship. Two weeks before the Championship, he had decided to stay home to open the winter season. But Marlene persuaded him to play, and it paid off handsomely in a Hollywood-type finish. Going into the final hole, he had a two stroke lead over Steve Benson, a 31- year-old PGA head professional from Glen Ellyn, Ill., who made a 30-foot birdie on the 72nd hole. That forced Hammer to make a 10-foot par putt to capture the the National Championship.
