Soft-spoken Bob Galloway was the only golfer in the field to better par each of the four days, but never thought he could win, until the 15th hole on the final day when he holed a 40-foot putt to save par. Galloway, part owner of a golf course in Rock Hill, S.C., went on to birdie the 16th and 17th holes. Despite bogeying the final hole, his 6-under-par 280 total was one shot better than George Lanning, Larry Gilbert and Jim Ferriell Jr. Ferriell was the second- and third-round leader.
