Just as he had done a year before, Roger Watson overtook the leader and forced a sudden-death playoff. This time his victim was David Jimenez, and Watson didn’t wait until the final hole to nab Jimenez. Watson closed in on him four holes earlier, when he trumped a bogey by Jiminez with a birdie of his own. In the playoff, he didn’t want to count on winning with a par, like he did the previous year, so he made a 20-foot birdie to successfully defend The National Championship.
